Strategic Communications
Make the news or escape the news
With Mascott, you get a principal, not a team. Newsroom instincts applied to the story you tell and the story told about you.
Who You Get
The man who takes the brief produces the work
Engaging Mascott means Matt Scott – a former Guardian and Telegraph staff investigative journalist whose daily column covered finance, politics, law and governance.
In business, the stories you tell – and the stories told about you – matter. Blue-chip companies retain Mascott while the narrative is still theirs to control.
Analysis. Scepticism. Lateral thinking.
Mascott roots for you.
Across a multi-year retainer with a listed company, Mascott has contributed to investor-relations rehearsals and interrogated and written the statutory sustainability reporting at group and subsidiary level. Reputation-risk analysis and a crisis-communications plan have been delivered as standard.
An insurance multinational launched a new human-capital asset-redundancy product and sought to break into the football market. Mascott oversaw brand and marketing, supported by proprietary data-analysis proof points, achieving coverage in the Financial Times, the Sunday Telegraph and executive-level access at more than a dozen Premier League clubs.
For five years, Mascott directed and implemented the brand and marketing strategy of an intellectual-property consultancy, taking it from a regional practice to a national sector leader. Mascott assisted with product development, produced materials that accompanied a period of triple-digit revenue growth and managed reputation and stakeholder risk.

Next Steps
What next?
A Mascott retainer brings the principal, not a junior learning the brief. A short call establishes whether there is a fit. If there is, a proposal follows.
About Mascott
An expert journalist, not a junior brief-holder
Mascott was founded in 2013. It is a one-principal practice, retained by companies in financial services, professional services, technology and media.
That principal is Matt Scott, who made his name on national news desks as a staff journalist with The Guardian and The Telegraph. Alongside that he spent sixteen years on talkSPORT and appeared as a pundit for Sky, ESPN and others.
His daily Digger column investigated the finance, the rulebook, the governance and the politics. Very often, when one failed they all did. His job was to expose the gap between the story a club told and the story the numbers told.
Mascott’s method is the same one that career trained: read the document, ask the question that is not in the brief and write it to be legible to anyone. Clients who want that method applied to their own narrative retain Mascott.
In 2009 a Digger investigation into a fraudulent takeover ended in a six-year sentence and, much later, a Sky Documentaries original film. Find out more in Track Record.

The King of Lies investigation
A fraud built for the public markets
Through his Digger column in 2009, Matt Scott exposed a financial fraud whose object was the stock-market listing of a Switzerland-registered holding company, said to control the mineral rights to North Korea’s mines.
The investigation ran through the secrecy jurisdictions of Jersey, Switzerland and the Caribbean. It ended in a six-year custodial sentence for the man at the centre of the scheme. Sport had been the marketing vehicle. It brought in a famous name – Sven-Göran Eriksson, arriving at Notts County with a promise to take the world’s oldest league club from the fourth tier to the Premier League. The riches did not exist.
Matt’s journalism unravelled the fraud, forestalled an expansion into Formula One and stopped the structure reaching the public markets.
In 2025 the same facts became a Sky Documentaries original, on which Matt was associate producer. It has been nominated for a 2026 Grierson Award.
On air and on screen

Insights
From the press box to the boardroom
Before founding Mascott, Matt spent five years writing the Digger column for The Guardian and several more as a columnist for Insideworldfootball, covering the finance, regulation and governance of professional sport. The analysis he now brings to Mascott's clients is the same rigour previously applied, in public, to the Premier League, UEFA and FIFA.
From Mascott
Just a journalist
Matt Scott“You’re just a journalist, Matt.”
Beijing, 2008I was at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing when I heard these words, speaking to a well-known individual in the sports space who had set up a successful communications consultancy.
The conversation had begun because, although I had reached the top of newspaper journalism with my daily Digger column in The Guardian, I was of the view that the press game might not hold the long-term future I once thought it would. Did he have any jobs?
No. “You’re just a journalist, Matt.”
Those words have stayed with me for the best part of 20 years. And they provoke the question: just what is “a journalist”?
The answer is that a good one has more skills than my old contact understood. First, a journalist is a stakeholder manager, capable of maintaining a network of hundreds or thousands of contacts who will yield information to them.
They have a keen instinct for what is relevant, that “news sense” that tells them what it is people generally want to know about. And they have both the confidence and the clarity of thought to ask the questions that deliver that information.
Some even have a broad range of core competencies – an ability to read a report and accounts, to comprehend and analyse data, to be conversant with legalese and technical jargon and to identify developing trends in politics, business, finance and technology.
The best are lateral thinkers, keen to “take the story on” with a new angle that no one else will have thought of.
Finally, they are a strong communicator, able to garner and distil information into its most salient points. Then they can retain and reproduce that information in concise, compelling narratives for written or audiovisual content that speak to their audiences, coupled with a catchy headline and intro.
All of this maps onto the core needs of the modern business world. As more and more content is produced, often by artificial intelligence (AI), the need to generate cut-through is greater than ever.
That means engaging an effective stakeholder manager and lateral thinker with a good news sense, who “gets” the jargon and who can communicate difficult concepts in strong, compelling terms.
In short, just a journalist.
